Job Duties   What will you be doing?

GATX is deploying continuous improvement across the enterprise emphasizing Lean and Six Sigma process management with relentless problem solving.  With experience within operations and deploying continuous improvement across a variety of functional areas of an organization, the CI Manager will lead key projects to improve the safety, quality, lead time, and value of critical business processes at GATX.  This role focuses on the railcar repair network in North America.


1. Lead key strategic projects and initiatives for the Operations group using facilitation and change management skills:
- Use the appropriate Lean / Six Sigma tools as required (Black Belt)
- Be a thought provoking leader (managerial level) throughout the organization to develop key stakeholders in all areas of GATX for project development
- Typically involves cross functional engagement including: Service Centers, Engineering, Quality, Material Procurement, Operations Finance, Customer Service, Fleet Management

2. Train staff in the use of DMAIC and  promote a relentless problem-solving culture in order to deliver the key strategic projects and initiatives identified within the Operations organization by use of DMAIC:
- Develop and modify Lean training curriculum and skills assessment tools for all levels of experience
- Plan and conduct problem-solving sessions and workshops
- Facilitate and empower teams to engage in local problem-solving

Other things to note:

- Travel requirements vary with assignments, but could be as much as 40% of the time across North America
- The Continuous Improvement Leader interacts primarily with Operations senior managers, Commercial senior managers, department managers, and service center managers. The incumbent must also be able to prepare, present, and defend recommendations and decisions to project sponsors and senior management.

Skills/Knowledge   What is required of you?

- Bachelor’s degree in operations management, engineering, business or other relevant discipline is required (MBA desired)
- 8-10 years’ experience in an analytical roles, preferably in Maintenance, Repair, Operations (MRO) or heavy industrial environment ideally from a corporate level
- Strong knowledge and experience in applying business improvement practices such as Lean, Six Sigma TPM, Hoshin Kanri; relevant certification in same is desirable from an ASQ institution
- Proven experience influencing and persuading without having direct authority
- Significant Project management experience (PMP preferred)
- Six Sigma Black Belt certification from accredited institution required
